Concussion Q & A
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a mild type of traumatic brain injury that happens when your brain shakes rapidly back and forth inside your skull. If your brain hits the inside of your skull, it causes chemical changes to occur and can lead to brain cell damage. While concussions usually aren’t life-threatening, the lasting effects can be very serious.
If you have a concussion, you shouldn’t be quick to return to any sports or activities that could put you at risk for another. Concussions often happen during sports from impact or falls. If you get a second concussion before the first fully heals, severe brain swelling can happen, and the consequences could be deadly.
Be The Change Health & Wellness Center offers several therapies that promote healing throughout your body, including in the brain.
How can I tell if I have a concussion?
Concussions display symptoms that others around you might notice before you do. However, you might notice some symptoms yourself too. Soon after the injury, you might experience:
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Light sensitivity
- Slurred or slow speech
- Balance problems Seizures
If the symptoms don’t arise immediately, they might appear in the days, weeks, or even months after the injury happened. As soon as you or a loved one notices symptoms that might indicate a concussion, you should seek medical care right away.
How are concussions treated?
Be The Change Health & Wellness Center offers two holistic therapies that can promote healing after traumatic brain injuries like concussions. It’s important initially to take some time to rest and recover from a concussion. That means staying away from work or school temporarily and avoiding engaging activities like reading or exercising.
For the lingering effects of a concussion, your provider might recommend:
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has many benefits that could improve symptoms of a concussion, like boosting brain function and relieving inflammation. During the treatment, you lie down in a pressurized chamber as a high concentration of oxygen dissolves into your bloodstream. This improves tissue regeneration and repair.
Frequency Specific Microcurrent™ (FSM) therapy
FSM therapy uses electromagnetic pulses to stabilize the chemical structure of your tissues. This has implications for concussions as it improves tissue repair and decreases inflammation.
