What is a concussion?
A concussion is a mild type of traumatic brain injury that happens when your brain shakes rapidly back and forth inside your skull. If your brain hits the inside of your skull, it causes chemical changes to occur and can lead to brain cell damage. While concussions usually aren’t life-threatening, the lasting effects can be very serious.
If you have a concussion, you shouldn’t be quick to return to any sports or activities that could put you at risk for another. Concussions often happen during sports from impact or falls. If you get a second concussion before the first fully heals, severe brain swelling can happen, and the consequences could be deadly.
Be The Change Health & Wellness Center offers several therapies that promote healing throughout your body, including in the brain.
How can I tell if I have a concussion?
Concussions display symptoms that others around you might notice before you do. However, you might notice some symptoms yourself too. Soon after the injury, you might experience:
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Light sensitivity
- Slurred or slow speech
- Balance problems
- Seizures
If the symptoms don’t arise immediately, they might appear in the days, weeks, or even months after the injury happened. As soon as you or a loved one notices symptoms that might indicate a concussion, you should seek medical care right away.
